Orewa College Students Take Their Road Safety Message to Local Radio
Three dedicated students from Orewa College – Christine, Imi, and Bhavi – recently took their road safety message to local radio, sharing their experiences and insights following a successful SADD campaign ahead of the school ball.
The students caught up with Nick Rado at More FM Rodney to discuss the road safety awareness initiative they led at their school, which focused on encouraging students to plan ahead, make safe choices, and look after their friends during ball season.
As part of the campaign, Orewa SADD students visited classrooms and delivered an interactive presentation featuring a short video and quiz. The sessions were designed to engage their peers in conversations about safe transport options and the importance of making responsible decisions before, during, and after the school ball.
The session highlighted key messages around reducing risks for young drivers and passengers while promoting a culture of care and responsibility among students. By encouraging students to think ahead and support one another, the SADD group helped reinforce the message that everyone has a role to play in keeping themselves and their friends safe.
During the radio interview, the students spoke about the role of their SADD group and their commitment to addressing road safety issues affecting young people in their community. They reflected on the awareness event they organised, the positive engagement from students, and the impact that peer led conversations can have on influencing safer behaviours.
The discussion also explored future opportunities for road safety advocacy, with Christine, Imi, and Bhavi sharing ideas for initiatives they hope to bring to their school and wider community. Their passion and leadership demonstrate the powerful role young people can play in creating positive change and promoting safer roads for everyone.
We are incredibly proud of Christine, Imi, and Bhavi for stepping up as road safety ambassadors and using their voices to encourage safer choices among their peers. Their leadership, creativity and commitment to looking after others are making a meaningful difference within their school and beyond.
Thanks again to Nick and More FM Rodney for having SADD on your show!
