Community
Road Safety
Programme

Kaitaiki o Ara/SADD has been empowering young Kiwis to prevent loss on our roads since 1985. The SADD team provide guidance and support using best practice, evidence based, road safety education approaches to influence their peers and wider community to positively promote safe road user behaviours. We encourage whole of community approaches to encourage positive, lifelong road user behaviours and reduce the incidence and severity of harm caused by road trauma. An emphasis is on good decision making and societal contribution.

In 2023 we expanded our programme to assist vulnerable young road users who are not engaged in mainstream schools or who would not be exposed to our student-led programme in schools. These additional workshops are offered to various providers to help assist their participants to adopt safer road user behaviours. The workshops are tailored to meet the needs of the course and the participants.

Learning objectives for the CRSP:

1.      To increase knowledge about how to keep themselves and others safe on our roads.

2.      To increase awareness of the consequences of unsafe road user behaviours (RIDS* and Driver Licence) for themselves and others, and increase motivation to comply with road user rules.

3.      To reflect upon unsafe road user behaviours that they may have been practicing and to identify the opportunities during the event for safer driver choices.

   * Restraints, Impairment, Distractions, Speed

Key Strategies:

1.      Tailored Interventions: Customize interventions to address specific risky behaviours prevalent among the target audience, such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding.

2.      Collaboration with Partners: Work with organizations already engaging at-risk youth to embed road safety education into their programs.

3.      Interactive and Engaging Activities: Design interventions that are age-appropriate and interactive to ensure they resonate with the youth.

4.      Evidence-Based Approach: Utilise good practice road safety education and behaviour change techniques to design effective interventions.

Outcomes:

1.     Participants are better informed about how to keep themselves and others safe on our roads

2.     Participants understand the consequences of unsafe road user behaviours (RIDS and Driver Licence) and benefits of complying with road user rules

3.     Participants gain a greater understanding about how to avoid risky road user behaviours and develop safer driver choices to avoid the criminal justice system and death and serious injury.

4.     Long-Term Benefits: Instilling safe driving habits in youth leads to lifelong positive attitudes towards road safety, reducing future road trauma and associated costs.

In School Programme

Participants problem solve a road safety issue and design and deliver an educational activity to their peers to encourage safer road user behaviours

U-Turn

Kaitiaki o Ara/SADD partners with NZ Police to deliver road safety education to participants who have come to Police attention for traffic related offending.

Level Up

This programme is designed to reach vulnerable road users to educate them about the consequences of risky driving behaviours and providing alternative options to adopt safer road user choices.
