Introducing our newest team member, Dana!
We’re excited to welcome a new face to the Kaitiaki o Ara/SADD team! Dana brings a strong background in youth development, education, and community work, along with a genuine passion for supporting young people to thrive. From teaching in the UK to working with families in South Auckland, her journey has been all about creating positive impact. Get to know Dana-what drives her, what she’s passionate about, and why she’s excited to be part of SADD.
Tell us about yourself!
Kia ora everyone! My name is Dana, and I moved to New Zealand from the UK last year with my wife. I’ve been fortunate to travel and experience so much of this beautiful country already, Aoraki / Mount Cook has been a real highlight for me so far.
I’m half English and half Palestinian, and I spent much of my younger years moving between the UK and Kuwait. I come from a big family, so staying connected with loved ones is important to me. I love travelling, trying new things, and embracing new experiences!
What did you do before joining SADD?
Before joining SADD, I worked in South Auckland as a mentoring coordinator for a charity, supporting families and young people affected by the incarceration of a parent. Prior to moving to New Zealand, I was a secondary school teacher, teaching life skills to students aged 12 to 16, which I absolutely loved! I hold a degree in Youth Work and Community Development and spent two summers doing Camp America, where I gained valuable experience and discovered my passion for supporting and empowering young people to thrive.
What does road safety mean to you?
To me, road safety means taking responsibility for myself and others on the road. It’s about making smart choices, whether I’m driving, walking, or cycling, to prevent accidents and protect lives.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy playing football, travelling, and going for walks. I also like cooking, reading, and meeting up with friends.
What excites you about joining the team at SADD?
I’m excited to join the SADD team because I enjoy supporting young people and providing a space where young people’s voiced are heard. I really admire that SADD focuses on empowering young people, giving them the tools to become leaders and make informed decisions. Not just for their own safety, but for the safety of others, on the road.
If you were on a deserted island, what three things would you want to have with you?
- A hammock
- Matches to light a fire
- A good book to keep me entertained.
Where is your favourite place in the whole world?
I don’t have a single favourite place in the world, as there are so many places I’ve loved for different reasons. I really enjoy experiencing different foods and cultures, and I appreciate the history and unique character that each place has to offer.
We’re really excited to have Dana on board and can’t wait for you all to get to know her. Dana joins us as our Programme Delivery Lead for the Upper North Island, based in Auckland and working across Auckland, Northland, and the Far North. She’ll be supporting schools, building connections, and helping bring SADD to life in her regions.
You’ll likely hear from Dana soon as she is now on the journey of connecting with schools and students. In the meantime, feel free to reach out and introduce yourself or get in touch if you’re keen to work together: dana@sadd.org.nz
Welcome to the team, Dana—we’re stoked to have you with us!
