What you can do to keep safe

No one ever thinks it’ll happen to them - until it does.

Bridie’s story is a powerful reminder that one moment, one decision, one car ride can change everything. This page is about what you can do to stay safe — before, during, and after a night out. Whether it’s making a plan, speaking up when something doesn’t feel right, or looking out for your mates, these simple choices can make all the difference.

What can you do?

Plan Before You Party

Good nights start with smart plans.

  • Sort your ride early. Know who’s driving and make sure they’re sober, rested, and reliable.

  • Have a backup plan. Stuff happens - make sure you know what to do if your ride falls through.

  • Share your plans. Let someone you trust know where you’re going and how you’ll get home.

Make Safe Rides Non-Negotiable

You’ve got every right to feel safe in the car.

  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is.

  • Say no to risky rides. Don’t get in if the driver’s been drinking, using drugs, or driving recklessly.

  • Help your mates. If someone’s about to hop in a car that doesn’t feel safe, step up. Offer another way home.

Talk It Out

Yeah, it can feel awkward, but these are the convos that actually matter.

  • With friends: Make a pact to have each other’s backs and never judge if someone says they feel uncomfortable.

  • With your parents or caregivers: Chat about your plans and what you’ll do if things go wrong.

  • With your group: Decide that speaking up is something to respect — not something to tease.
