Rangitoto College SADD Expo Inspires Students to Show Up For Road Safety
On Monday 28th July, the Rangitoto College SADD group hosted an outstanding Road Safety Expo, bringing together students and community partners for an engaging afternoon focused on making our roads safer.
The event created a fantastic atmosphere across the school, with more than 200 students attending and visiting a range of interactive activities designed to encourage safe road use and positive decision making.
Students had the opportunity to learn practical skills from the AA, who demonstrated how to safely change a tyre and explained why basic vehicle knowledge is an important part of being a safe driver. New Zealand Police were also on site with a police vehicle, giving students a chance to explore the car, ask questions, and learn more about how officers work to keep people safe on our roads.
Auckland Transport challenged students with an impairment activity using impairment goggles, giving students a hands on experience of how alcohol and drugs can affect coordination, reaction times, and judgement, reinforcing the importance of never driving while impaired.
One of the highlights of the expo was the iconic KITT (Knight Rider) car, which attracted plenty of attention throughout the event. Alongside the SADD vehicle, students were invited to write road safety pledges on Post-it Notes, sharing actions they would take to keep themselves and others safe on the roads. They also reflected on what they would miss most if they were seriously injured in a crash, creating a powerful visual reminder of why every road safety decision matters.
Adding to the fun was a road safety themed bake sale, where students created a range of creative treats inspired by road safety messages. The baked goods were incredibly popular and were enjoyed by students throughout the event.
The enthusiasm shown by students, staff, and community partners made the expo a huge success. It was inspiring to see so many young people actively engaging with road safety conversations, learning practical skills, and making personal commitments to help keep themselves and others safe on our roads.
