A Busy Term 4 for SADD Groups

Christchurch SADD groups have had a huge Term 4, packed with activities, initiatives, and plenty of momentum heading into next year!

Burnside High School SADD absolutely nailed their road safety awareness day, supported by New Zealand Police. The event featured a bake sale, impairment goggle challenge, police equipment demonstrations, and heaps of giveaways. What really stood out was the group’s thoughtful follow-up — after each participant completed the impairment obstacle course, SADD members asked how it felt and discussed the dangers of driving while impaired. They also handed out SADD conversation cards to keep those important discussions going well after the event. The team’s recent involvement in a Youth Voice Canterbury event planning hui clearly paid off — the learnings were on full display!

Villa Maria College SADD also made a big impact with their pledge car activity, where students wrote encouraging road safety messages across the SADD vehicle. Nearly the entire school took part, and the group finished the day with almost two full pages of names from students eager to sign up for SADD in 2026!

Meanwhile, Akaroa Area School SADD have been planning a full-scale road safety expo for their school, featuring tyre-changing demonstrations, impairment goggles, giveaways, and presentations from Fire and Emergency and NZ Police. As a small but mighty group of two (soon to be one when a member heads to Ara next year), they’re determined to raise awareness and inspire new members for 2026. They’ll also be promoting SADD’s annual conference in Dunedin (7–9 April) and the upcoming Christchurch SADD workshop on 26 February. Exciting times ahead for Akaroa!

Finally, Delivery Lead Mark recently caught up with Christchurch Boys’ High School, who are gearing up to join the SADD movement in 2026. The group is keen to host a tyre-changing expo to educate students on vehicle safety — watch this space!

Across the motu, there’s been plenty more action!

Garin College ran a fun and fast-paced tyre-changing competition, made possible thanks to the awesome support of Clint and the team at Stoke Mechanical and Tyre Services, Mel from Nelson Police, and Brenda from Garin College — teamwork at its best!

Dannevirke High School has officially claimed the title of largest SADD group in Aotearoa, with over 100 members! They got stuck in this term by inviting a crew from Fire and Emergency to their assembly to kōrero about their role as first responders.

Napier Girls’ High School also got in on the action with support from local Police and Road Safe Hawke’s Bay. Their school-wide event included a photo booth, a Walk the Line activity, quizzes, giveaways, and a sausage sizzle — a fantastic way to wrap up the term!

The SADD team have been totally inspired to see such an action-packed Term 4. It’s awesome to see students continuing to raise awareness for youth road safety, even with their busy schedules. Ka mau te wehi, everyone!
