Two Powerful Weeks, Epic Opportunity

This May, we’ve got two awesome weeks back-to-back celebrating you — our incredible rangatahi — and the difference you make in your communities. We’re in the middle of Road Safety Week (12 - 18th May) and rolling straight into Youth Week (19 - 25th May). What a combo!

Road Safety Week 101

This year’s theme is ‘Be a Road Safety Hero’—a chance to celebrate the people who help make our roads safer and support others after crashes, while also reminding each of us that we all have a part to play. Everyone can be a Road Safety Hero - including YOU. Use this week to celebrate anyone who is making our roads safer and shout out the people who really make a difference to you. This is your chance to speak up for safe journeys on the road because all have a part to play in keeping our roads safe.

There are many ways you can get involved in the RSW such as going yellow, connecting with your community partners, running an activity, creating a poster and raising awareness in your school, or simply posting on social media. Whatever suits your schedule, any contribution is valued.

What’s Youth Week All About?

Youth Week celebrates the creativity, leadership and impact of young people across Aotearoa — with events, art, performances and initiatives by youth, for youth.

This year’s theme is “Whai Wāhitanga – Take Our Place” — a reminder to show up, speak out and step into spaces where your voice matters. That’s what SADD is all about — youth-led change for safer roads and stronger communities.

Road Safety + Youth Week = The Perfect Pairing

If your SADD group is already active during Road Safety Week, keep the momentum going! Use Youth Week to showcase your mahi, build your group, and invite more people to get involved.

Easy Ways to Get Involved:

  • Run a lunchtime event – Add kai, music, and a fun SADD activity like a quiz or pledge wall

  • Put up SADD posters or stickers – Share bold messages about taking your place and making safe choices

  • Run a SADD activity - our website is full of activity ideas that you can use to get your peers thinking and talking about road safety!

  • Create a TikTok or reel – A skit, dance or short message about youth voice or road safety

  • Host a kōrero – Collaborate with another student group to talk about issues that matter to you

  • Run a creative comp – Posters, poems or memes with a road safety twist

Doing something cool? Show us!

Let’s make May a month of action and youth power.

Take your place. Use your voice. Be heard.
