Handing things over

Kia ora SADD whānau, it is almost the time of year where we can kick back, relax and reflect on all of our mahi that we have done. But, before we fully chill out, let's have one more think about how we can have a positive impact on our communities moving forward into next year. Read on to see how you can leave a powerful SADD legacy, even if you are currently in year 13!

An easy win:
A great and easy way to make sure things continue on strongly with your group is by passing the torch. If you have a good supportive school staff member, leaving the important info with them could be a good option or you could pass it onto the younger members in your group directly. However you do it, it can be really helpful to include information such as the key contact details for your SADD programme delivery lead, community partners, school staff, and anyone else that has helped out your group. SADD has a really handy ‘passing the torch’ document which you can access here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5e9fc84856b73c7d8df61c78/t/634de2dc6de2a7105e7a3099/1666048732379/Passing+on+the+torch.pdf

If you know who is taking over next year, get them to introduce themselves to your SADD delivery lead. That way, they’ll be able to kick off term 1 planning straight away! You can find the staff team’s contact details here: https://www.sadd.org.nz/contact-us

Things to mention:
A great way for your group to start next year would be by attending a term 1 workshop. Hopefully, if you mention this to your group at least some of them will get to come along to share some ideas with like-minded people as well as have some fun and learn something new!

Also, make sure your group keeps their eyes on the SADD website for information about the 2023 SADD conference! Registration will go live in term 1.

Helpful resources for newbies:
There is a heap of incredible resources on the SADD website but it can be overwhelming if you are new and don’t know where to start. If you know your group is going to be new in SADD in 2023 then starting with a masterclass could be helpful. They can watch it here: https://www.sadd.org.nz/master-class

Of course, the activity and resource hub is another great place to visit on the website once the group is up and running: https://www.sadd.org.nz/activities-resource-hub

Encourage them to explore the SADD website and to give us a follow on social media under the handle @saddnz - you could always write this info on the passing the torch document too!

Going to miss us? We’ll miss you too!
At SADD we fully understand that once people finish school they may not have time to contribute to SADD anymore. We get that, you’ve got a life to live! However, if you aren’t ready to say goodbye just yet, make sure you mention it to your delivery lead and pass on your contact details for next year. Even if you want to do something as a one-off, that’s totally cool!

SADD’s resources are available to all to benefit your communities. If you want to use them after you have finished school, please do! You could get your youth council involved or you could start a club at uni. We’d love to talk about this further so keep us in the loop and we’d be happy to help!

Skylah Holmes was involved with SADD in 2019 & 2020 but still starred in our “keeping your vehicle safe” video this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtR6vCwyurE&ab_channel=SADDNZ

One more chance to get involved this year:
If you have a spare 10 minutes this month, we’d love to see some contributions to our Kaitiaki o Ara summer social media campaign. This year’s theme is “keep summer great, look out for your mates!”

This summer we will be sharing videos to remind people to stay safe on our roads. We’d love to hear what your top tips for staying safe are. These videos don’t need to be long and will help contribute to spreading awareness for road safety. If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved in, then head to the summer campaign section of our website for more information. If making videos isn’t your thing, check out the other ways to get involved too! https://www.sadd.org.nz/summer-campaign

If you are looking for some inspiration, check out some of last year's summer campaign videos on our youtube channel when our theme was “what will you choose?”

A big congrats!
Lastly, congratulations to all of the SADD groups, students, and supporters all over Aotearoa. The work you have done this year has been inspirational and you should rest easy knowing that you have made a positive impact on your community. Every little bit counts and it takes consistency to inspire a change in culture. Just by having conversations about road safety with your peers has an impact and you should be proud of being a changemaker. The team at SADD are always so impressed by the passion and drive SADD rangatahi show to keep their communities safe, Ka rawe!
