An interview with Lily

Recently, Mark was out and about delivering term 2 workshops. On his stint in Central Otago, he got to visit the SADD group at Mount Aspiring College in Wanaka.

The workshop went really well and some great topics were discussed such as recruitment, keeping members committed, SADD’s new interactive video resource and planning for SAFER September.

Towards the end of the workshop, Lily who is a member of the Mt Aspiring group let Mark know that her young enterprise subject at school was quite relevant to SADD.

Lily and her classmates had been tasked with creating a product that meets a need in the community, Lily chose to focus on young drivers being prepared and safe. To meet this need, Lily’s group created a product called “DriveProtect” which educates drivers on how to change a tire, check the oil levels in a vehicle, fit snow chains and jump start a car. The aim of the product is to educate drivers on important information that they may not have learned during the driver licence journey.

A DriveProtect pack includes a booklet with all of the above mentioned information as well as information about how driving whilst impaired can be dangerous. Included with the booklet is a tyre tread level checker, an ice scraper, a window breaker and a seat belt cutter.

You can find more information about DriveProtect by searching for drive.protect on Instagram.

Lily has also been involved in the Wanaka Alcohol Group as a SADD student representative. This has been a really enjoyable experience so far for Lily, she has particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work with adults from different agencies from all over Wanaka. It has been a great chance to experience a professional environment as a young person as well as an excellent opportunity to have a youth voice and represent her peers.
