What's new this month

Kia ora koutou Kaitiaki o Ara supporters, thanks for taking the time to take a quick peek at our August newsletter!

It has been a busy month for our delivery team and I have been on the road for the last two weeks visiting a great bunch of keen SADD students who are getting prepared for SAFER September which was a big focal point of our term 3 workshops.

A glorious range of activities and campaigns were discussed from Kahoot!, leaflet drops and surveys to tyre changing competitions, 'dress a door' activities for juniors and "what would you miss" cars.

Senior SADD students have also been thinking about what kind of legacy they want to leave behind when they finish school so have engaged with younger students in the planning and implementation phase of activities. This will help to prepare them so they can lead things when it is their time to shine.

Inside our newsletter this month you will find heaps of epic human beings doing epic things including a very cool rail safety video featuring a group of awesome SADD students as well as the winner of our Valued Partner Contribution Award.

Our first Valued Partner Contribution Award goes to....?

One of the best things about my job is that I work with some amazing people who are passionate about keeping our communities safe on our roads. Holly Hullena from Wairarapa Road Safety Trust is one of those amazing people.

Holly is demonstrably passionate about supporting our rangatahi/youth to empower them to lead road safety initiatives in their communities and was the driving force behind the recent Wairarapa Youth Symposium.

We wanted to recognise the amazing mahi Holly does with youth. As we would both be at the SASTA (Safe and Sustainable Transport Association) hui in Wellington (August), the timing was good to publicly acknowledge her.

We took the opportunity to present Holly with the SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara Valued Partner Contribution Award.

SADD On The Road

August has been a month filled with running workshops and school visits for our Delivery Team. They have also been helping students plan for SAFER September, starting new groups and gathering together students from regions.

We have loved spending time with rangatahi all over the country! Lots of groups are currently planning for SAFER September, so we are looking forward to sharing all the activities they run over the next month.

Tairāwhiti welcomes Bobbi

This August I spent plenty of time on the road, so I thought I'd share a few highlights from my adventure over to Tairāwhiti!

I caught up with one of our National Leaders Hayley Lincoln and her group at Campion College. They are working on a handful of activities in collaboration with Gisborne Girls High for SAFER September. It's fantastic to see schools collaborate to help create safer roads for Aotearoa.

On my way up I popped in at Wairoa College, Sacred Heart Napier, Havelock North High school and Hastings Youth Council.

Hastings Youth Council are working on ways they can help rangatahi increase the pass rate for restricted licencing.

I also met with a number of our regional partners including Allison Ludlow (Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer, FENZ), Lauriel Chase (RSC Gisborne), Liz Schlierike (RSC Hawkes Bay) as well as ACC Injury Prevention Partners Dayna Manuel (Hawkes Bay) and Sandy Keen (Hawkes Bay/Manawatu).

Students deliver level crossing safety message

To support Rail Safety Week (August), Mākoura College and Wairarapa College students, all members of SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara, made a video about safety at level crossings of the region’s railway line. We fed it out on our social media as soon as it was ready

Partner Update

Following the gifting and introduction of SADD's alternative te reo Māori name - Kaitiaki o Ara - along with new logos, we have commenced work to rebrand across the organisation.

We’ve been quietly working away in the background on the next stage of the operation which includes refreshing all of our print resources, so they remain fit for purpose and continue to meet the needs of our students, schools and communities.

We are consulting with our National Leaders and continue to engage with our students throughout this process. We aim to have a new range of posters and stickers ready to order by Term 1 next year so watch this space!
