this month

Welcome to our October newsletter. Yes - we are early this month and there's a good reason for that. We have a long weekend coming up. We wanted this edition of our newsletter to be in your hands before Labour Day and around the same time as our media statement goes out. You'll find a little more on what we are saying as you scroll through this month's articles.

We have welcomed our newest recruit, Sherein, who joins Mark to complete the expanded SADD team.

The SADD air fresheners have finally arrived. Lockdown did mean they got stuck for a while but we have them now (better late than never!). We also welcome the SADD GIPHY stickers (thanks to National Leader Jess!) into our bank of resources. More to come on that!

Although there have been obvious restrictions for SADD groups, we've received a number of great videos from students. Mia writes about another example. This month also saw a National Leader (yr 12s) event in mighty Ōtautahi/Christchurch - the first coming together for these young leaders!

The page is starting to turn from 2021 to 2022 and as a team, we are well into planning for next year so keep your eyes on our social media, keep reading the newsletters for updates and opportunities to get involved and have your voice heard.

Yr 12 National Leader Hui

During the October school holidays, we ran two National Leadership Programme workshops simultaneously. One workshop in person was held in Christchurch and one online for those that could not attend. These events are always a highlight, and this one did not disappoint. The SADD team were once again reminded of the calibre of the amazing young leaders that are involved with SADD.

Police Pathways Program Video Competition

It was really important for us to think of a way to keep the Police Pathway Program (PPP) students engaged throughout lockdown.

We created a competition format that involved four different categories for students to choose from. They had two weeks to think of a road safety or wellbeing issue within their community and either create a social media clip, a meme/poster, a social media post or an activity outline.

Students submitted outstanding creative contributions for the judging panel made up of the SADD team, Vin, and Nerissa from the PPP and Tracey Bullock as a representative from the NZ Police. The winner is the 'Avoiding Risks Group' from Rotorua Girls High School. Congratulations to Helena, Josmi, Dekoda, Charlie and Isabella!

We are so thrilled about the amazing work all the students put in. It proved so successful, the competition will become part of the PPP in the future. We are excited to see more great mahi! There is no limit for creative minds.

Tauraroa Area School SAFER September Highlight

At the end of the last term, Tauraroa Area School held its annual 'Safer September/Summer' Great Cardboard Car Race - an awareness-raising event for SADD where teams make cardboard cars (with specific safety specs of course!) and race around our field, enjoying obstacles like

• Pit stop — where the competitors will eat a dry weetbix before continuing.

• Breath-testing station — competitors blow up a balloon while navigating cones and the mud!

SADD Gets Into Stickers

National Leader Jess spotted the fact that there was next to no choice of stickers to use when she messages friends and whanau. So - she went away and researched how to make and upload them.

The result? Jess uploaded a suite of stickers that have now been viewed 4 million times. Take a peek at these examples:

On a serious note - Labour Weekend is with us and last year 8 people died over the same weekend. We have combined the two topics for our media release. Jess has created a long weekend specific sticker and is playing her part to spread awareness of keeping safe on our roads during long weekends. Our challenge is for you to use them too and keep SADD in the convo!

Make the most of Motorcycle Awareness Month.  

The arrival of spring means a new riding season has started, time to celebrate and get back in the groove! Motorcycle Awareness Month is the perfect time to check that your gear and bike are ride-ready for the summer, and fine-tune your skills with a Ride Forever course. Keep an eye on the Ride Forever Facebook page for loads of safety tips from this year’s ambassadors, great reads from our riding community and the chance to win heaps of sweet prizes.
