APRIL EDITION

What's new this month

April has been a monumental month here at Kaitiaki o Ara, with our primary focus on our annual conferences in Dunedin, Wellington, and Auckland.

The calibre of content produced at these events has truly amazed us! The team felt incredibly humbled to spend time with such inspirational rangatahi, who are motivated to catalyze positive change in their communities. Read on to learn more about these remarkable events, the content they generated, and what lies ahead for the initiatives born from them.

It was also fantastic to see both Tayla and Jordan, SADD’s Youth Representative and Deputy Youth Representative on SADD’s board, at the conferences. Be sure to check out their blog post below.

In other news, Road Safety Week is almost here, presenting an exciting opportunity for all of us to raise awareness on the national stage. Campaigns like this offer young people an excellent chance to align their events with a national initiative, leveraging collective action to reach a wider audience. Road Safety Week will take place from May 20th to 26th, so start planning! Even small activities, such as putting up posters or having conversations about road safety with friends, can make a significant difference.

Conference 2024 - 3 cities in 2 weeks

Monthly theme - Speed

Speed is a constant focus here at Kaitiaki o Ara and it is a hot topic for us. We carried it on our social media across April and it was also a topic for a student challenge at our Conference.

The Motorcycling Safety campaign (April) also brings Speed (ride to the conditions) into the conversation as it is number 3 on its 5 point road safety behaviours. You can find out more about this in this edition.

A simple takeaway - all road users travel at some degree of speed.  The best way to travel is at the safest speed.  A safe speed gives you and those around you the greatest chance of surviving should you be involved in a crash.  Depending on conditions, a safe speed may be less than the posted speed.

Road Safety Week - who's your hero?

Road Safety Week (RSW) is coming (20 - 26 May).

If you attended Conference, you’ll know that we support RSW and encourage all SADD groups to jump on this opportunity to get involved to play their part in their community. All those smaller local contributions and activities add up to something big.

Tayla and Jordan managed to visit their nearest Conference location. You can learn more about their individual experiences in the new blog.

The Motorcycling Safety campaign commenced on 6th April and its target audience is one of the most at-risk groups, being 45-64-year-old male open road recreational riders (though the advice applies to other riders too).

People who ride motorcycles and mopeds are amongst the most vulnerable on our roads – significantly over-represented in deaths and serious injury crashes in Aotearoa.  Many students ride mopeds and scooters to their place of study.
 
The new NZTA Waka Kotahi campaign features real riders sharing their stories to promote riding to the conditions, riding sober and rested, riding to your ability, wearing personal protective equipment and doing rider training. Get to know vehicle safety rating labels

More than 6 in every 10 vehicles on registered motor vehicle dealers’ sites displayed a current safety rating label, according to Waka Kotahi’s nationwide survey completed late last year.

Results show many dealers recognise the value of voluntarily promoting safety ratings and helping to get more people into safer vehicles.

Based on analysis of the data from around 300 dealerships selected at random for the survey, Waka Kotahi found that vehicles with higher safety ratings were more likely to have a safety rating label displayed, compared with vehicles rated as 1 and 2 star.

Both fall in the same week and worth thinking about how they can fit together!

April 2024 brought a real highpoint with it in the form of the longest list of donors we have had in any one month. We nearly ran out of space in which to thank them. This mammoth thank-you coincided with what is probably our most important and busiest month of the year - being our Conference time.

So, this month, we want to express our gratitude and deepest thanks to:
