What's new this month

Wow Team!! What a month November has been. With our warmer months here don't forget to get involved in our summer campaign. You can read all about it below.

In this edition, we share the amazing mahi National Leader Haley and her Kaitiaki o Ara crew from Campion College have been doing. They have designed a great bumper sticker for our young people.

We also have amazing mahi happening up North. Sandra our Delivery Lead for the upper north island provides a glimpse of her work with Counties Manukau Police and the U-Turn programme - giving our young people a hand up with some of their not so great choices they might have made behind the wheel.

Passing the Torch - Send in your contacts for 2023

This is your chance to make sure that your legacy lives on. We ask you to "Pass the Torch" to those who are ready to accept it.

It's an important time of year for all of us at SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara and it is about both those who are leaving to go on to other things and those who commit to pick up and continue with the challenge.

It's not too late to ensure you have someone ready to continue your great work. Our team is here to help you through it and make it happen. Check out this blog for tips on "passing the torch" and how you can help set up your peers for success!

A message that sticks!

Mia chatted with Hayley, one of our y13 National Leaders, about her project. Hayley has been a National Leader since 2021 and established a SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara committee at Campion College in Gisborne.

She designed SADD stickers for the car with the tagline "Speed thrills and kills" and was able to link her SADD project with her curriculum. In the interview, Hayley shares her experiences as a National Leader, how the idea of her project came about and how she made it all happen.

School's out for summer!

Zac and George finished up at Francis Douglas in New Plymouth for the year but return for one last Kaitiaki o Ara event. Taking the juniors through an obstacle course and having a round of basketball with the fatal vision goggles. They collaborated with Marion Webby who is South Taranaki's Road Safety Superstar/Coordinator, a big mihi to you Marion! This was a great way to plant some seeds before going into 2023! U-Turn

SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara are partnering with Counties Manukau Police to better support young people who have made poor choices and consequently come to the attention of Police.

The U-turn course offers young participants an opportunity to learn about road safety. It also highlights the part they play in keeping themselves, as well as others, safe on our roads. The course also focuses on the prevention of further offending.

Course objectives are:

- To provide participants with the knowledge to help them keep themselves and others safe on our roads

- To highlight the consequences of unsafe road user behaviors and the benefits of complying with road user rules

- Participants gain insight from investigating a road safety issue relevant to their offending, where they develop safer driver choices to prevent further offending.

We have been involved in two pilot courses up to now. Our aim is to continue to develop the course alongside NZ Police and offer it to more areas in the future.

Thank-you for your kind gestures!

A huge thank-you to the year 11 drama class and Genevieve (drama teacher) at Wakatipu High School - Queenstown. They put on a production of "Too Much Punch For Judy", baked cakes and took gold coin donations for refreshments. They downloaded SADD resources to display at the performance and choose us as the recipient for funds they raised.

Finally, a massive thank-you to Abagail, Prue, Sasha, Lucy, Zara and Phoebe - Christchurch Girls' High School year 13 Young Enterprise Scheme group who donated part of their profits to us. They designed car air fresheners based on the Kiwi favourite "Ghost Chips" and sold them to school mates, family and whānau. They attended community markets and even secured a stall at Ballantynes in Christchurch on their way to smashing their target.

A massive big shout-out to you all from the whole team at Kaitiaki o Ara. We really can't do what we do without your involvement! Thank-you!
