MAY EDITION

What's new this month

Kia ora Koutou, welcome to our May Newsletter. Term two is well underway and it has been a busy start to the term for SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara.

We have two new staff on board, so firstly a big warm welcome to Steve and Bobbi our new Delivery Leads in the central and lower North Island. We are very happy to now have a delivery team of five, which means more support for rangatahi on the ground.

Road Safety Week was definitely a highlight from May, and you can read more about that below. We have also been enjoying getting back into schools, visiting young people, and making plans for workshops and events this term. It feels like after a bit of a tough start to the year with Covid that things are gaining momentum and it is very encouraging to see.

Our Leadership Programme applications are still open, so encourage any Yr12 students you know to get involved, it is such a positive opportunity for them!

Ngā mihi nui,

-Lydia

Starting off in some regions in the South Island, we are running some Road Safety Leadership Days in June. These are aimed at giving young people involved with SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara an opportunity to get together for a day, build their leadership skills and work on local road safety issues!

Leadership Programme - unleash your potential!

Do you or someone in Yr 12 you know, want to build leadership skills and contribute to a nationwide movement? Our Leadership Programme might be for you!

This is an awesome opportunity for young people wanting to build their CV and give back, we have extended our applications until June 10th, and you do not have to have previous experience with SADD to apply.

Road Safety Week - celebrating our road safety heroes

This years road safety week ran from 9-15th May. The theme was 'road safety heroes'. Sandra and Donna attended the launch on Monday the 9th. We helped celebrate all the amazing mahi our students do for road safety everyday. We got to share some of the amazing contributions our leaders have achieved. Ben Bonne and Jess Darnley were recognised as road safety heroes during the week. Sterling Maxwell, our youth representative on the board of trustees received the yellow ribbon road safety hero award. We are proud of all the great activities our rangatahi/youth do to raise awareness about road safety, they are our road safety heroes.

Read more about the launch, the awards and what activities students did during the week in the blog.

SADD car air fresheners handed out in Clutha.

Rachel Harrison, Road Safety Coordinator at Clutha District Council was the first to take our car air fresheners into the community and to hand them out at a Police Checkpoint.

We asked Rachel what drivers' reactions were - she told us "Yep they really liked them! And they made my bag smell good!"

We thought they are a good alternative to the traditional lolly bag and our initial exploratory run was only 1000 of each so they won't last forever but we are open to restocking and new designs. Drop us a line to chat over your needs and ideas.
