Among Sterling's many contributions, she is the first student to be part of the SADD/Kaitiaki o Ara Board and served two years in this role whilst also mentoring another student to take over the role. Sterling started her time with SADD as a year 9 student at Gisborne Girls’ High School - so 7 years in total so far. She has helped lead her peers in an environment where it was difficult to change the mindsets of those around her. She put her hand up to be the first Youth Representative on the SADD Board of Trustees and helped the Board collective better understand what young people are thinking and doing. Also, she recently coordinated a large survey looking into reasons behind driver licence breaches. That survey received over 500 responses and Sterling went on to present to Waka Kotahi and the Ministry of Transport where she shared the results with them. She’s also been working with others on ways to make SADD more accessible for rangatahi Māori, has helped to set up our Māori advisory group and contributed to SADD’s new Māori name - Kaitiaki o Ara. A new road safety award was launched in May 2022 as part of Road Safety Week and Sterling was the first person to receive it.
