What's new this month

Tēnā koutou katoa,

Ahhh, July, another amazing month for 2024. We tend to get swallowed up in the busyness of life around this time of year but never too consumed for road safety!

This July we had a big selection of applicants for our Rangatahi Hei Urungi programme to get through, an awesome problem to have I say! With that said a big BIG congratulations to all the new National and Regional leaders for 2024/25! Stay tuned for the new leader role announcement coming soon.

Every year gets better and this year's National Leader projects did not disappoint that’s for sure! Make sure to check out our latest blog below where our Year 13 leaders travel to the capital for their last get-together.

Finally, to wrap up, I hope everyone is well rested after the school holidays and ready to take on term 3, all guns blazing. We have a few bigger events coming up this term including Rail Safety Week, SAFER September, Motorcycle Awareness Month and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori just to name a few. Many of our groups and community partners will be planning and prepping to support all of these different kaupapa. I can hear a hum in the background, all the road safety busy bees working away for another safer Term 3.

Monthly theme: Driver Licence Journey

Drivers on a restricted licence are seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious injury crash than other drivers. Data also shows that young restricted drivers are more at risk of having a serious crash in the first six to 12 months of driving solo on their restricted licence than at any other time in their lives. This increased risk is partly due to driving inexperience.

Two of the riskiest situations for young drivers are driving at night and carrying passengers. That's why the conditions of the restricted licence prohibit driving without a supervisor between 10pm and 5am and carrying passengers without a supervisor at any time (with a few exceptions).

Now that we’re in Term 3, SAFER September is right on our heels! SAFER September is a month of celebration, acknowledgement and action. We are amping to see young Kiwis shouting from the rooftops about road safety, running activities and campaigns in their schools and communities to help educate their peers on positive road safety attitudes and behaviours.

Our Delivery Team is kicking into gear to support students to get planning for September. Our dedicated webpage is already full of helpful tips and resources to help you, with even more to come!

It’s that time of the year where some students are starting to consider what their next steps may be beyond the familiarity of high school. CVs are being drafted, study is being applied for and gap years are being considered. But don’t forget about your SADD experience when going through this process!

Being involved with SADD at school can bring loads of valuable experience and skills that you can take with you into your next stage of life. From teamwork skills to event planning experience, there is bound to be things you have achieved that employers will be looking for and will value seeing on your CV.

Catching good vibes with the SADD Vibe Tribe

At SADD, we truly value wellbeing and that’s why at the start of this year we decided to implement our staff wellbeing programme, aptly named the “Vibe Tribe”.

Each month, the team participates in a wellbeing activity to boost connection amongst our staff. As a team of people who work remotely, often separated from each other physically for long periods it was decided that this was super important!

Based on the wellbeing model “Te Whare Tapa Whā” the Vibe Tribe aims to address all areas of an individual’s wellbeing as well as increase connection within our small team. You can read more about Te Whare Tapa Whā here: Te Whare Tapa Whā

This month, the team came together for a shared digital lunch with a strict “no work chat” rule! We absolutely loved it and it was so great to have some company during our lunch time.
