It might be the end of Summer but SADD’s year is hotting up.

Our warmest season is coming to an end and with it our summer campaign. Thanks to all who sent in a campaign message. Your contribution helped us showcase a great bunch of tips that resonate the whole year-round.

School is back and SADD groups are picking up where they left off or starting up new. We're playing things safe though and Term 1 workshop planning comes with the acknowledgement that, as we know, life gets in the way of plans.

Workshops are a great way to help develop your SADD group and meet community partners. We do have a Plan B though and that's to do this in a fun, interactive and informative way. A little more on that follows below.

In this month's newsletter we feature the newly launched Road to Zero campaign, so check out the article below for info and resources. You'll also hear a little about what the Regional Leaders are up to. We finish up with a pretty heavy, but important and balancing topic - Public Attitudes to Road Safety.

Regional Leaders present to Donna and Rog

Our first ever group of Regional Leaders have been working hard behind the scenes and came together again earlier this month following a well earned summer break.

Nadine, Charlie, Vanessa and Aimee presented their ideas for connecting SADD students across the country. Piper did so the following week as she couldn't attend on the day. Special guest was Donna and she was wowed by what she heard from them all.

The Regional Leaders play an important part in the evolvement of SADD and it's great to have these amazing leaders helping SADD extend our connections in our communities to support our kaupapa - protecting our journeys on the roads.

We'll keep you updated as we progress this tasty project.

Get your Road to Zero resources

The Road to Zero campaign went live on 13 February 2022. SADD supports this fantastic mahi to reduce the number of people dying or being seriously injured on our roads.

This is the first time it has been introduced at scale to the general public so it's a good time to think about how your group can share messages and generate conversations in your communities.

Public Attitudes to Road Safety Report 2021

Here's something that will help your SADD group put facts into your thinking this year. If you want to know what public attitudes are on road safety - read on.....

Want to know what New Zealanders think about road safety?

Waka Kotahi has released the Public attitudes to road safety 2021 report. The report shows public attitudes to road safety topics, including:

• speed

• vehicle safety

• driver fatigue, impairment and distraction

• enforcement

• Road to Zero/Vision Zero.

The findings include:

Almost half of the population (44%) think deaths from road crashes are acceptable.
Almost one in four New Zealanders (23%) believe there’s not much chance of a crash if you are careful when you speed.
Most New Zealanders think existing speed limits, both on the open road and in urban areas, are about right. Three in four, however, support lower speed limits (<40km/h) around schools in urban areas.
Almost three in five drivers (57%) claim to have made hands-free phone calls while driving in the past month compared to one in two in 2020.
Very few drivers overall (11%) claim to check or reply to social media while driving. This is higher among the under 30’s at one in four.
